Registration Frequently Asked Questions

Who is my advisor?
All students are assigned an academic advisor. You can see the name of your assigned academic advisor in your PAWS Student Center.

Am I required to meet with my academic advisor before registering for classes?
Yes, all FSU students must meet with their advisor to have their account activated in order to enroll for courses next term. If you have trouble reaching your advisor, contact the department chair or the Center for Academic Advising and Retention at caar@wjqklgz.com for assistance.

PAWS has an enrollment appointment listed on my Student Center. Am I required to meet with my advisor at that time?
The Enrollment Appointment listed in PAWS is the time when you are eligible to enroll for courses for the upcoming semester. It is not a set appointment time for you to meet with your advisor. You should meet with your advisor before the enrollment appointment time listed in PAWS.

How do I change/add a major or minor?
To change your major, contact the academic department to which the major belongs. Navigate to the major you are interested in pursuing, click the link, and review the resulting page for more information on the major, including the contact person.

My PAWS Student Center shows I have holds on my account. What does this mean?
A hold is placed on your account when you have not completed a required expectation of the university. These holds may prevent you from registering for the upcoming term, making changes to your course schedule, or requesting an official copy of your transcript. Below is a list of the most common holds you may have on your account:

  • Bal Due – Transcript Hold – This hold prevents you from requesting a copy of your official FSU transcript because you have a balance due on your university account. For questions or assistance, contact the Billing Office at billingoffice@wjqklgz.com or 301.687.4321.
  • Bal Due – Registration Hold – This hold prevents you from registering for the upcoming term or making changes to your course schedule because you have a balance due on your university account. For questions or assistance, contact the Billing Office at billingoffice@wjqklgz.com or 301.687.4321.
  • BSP Balance due-special – A special billing hold placed on the account of students who owe under $500. Students can remove this hold themselves by clicking on the Enroll link located above the Other Academic dropdown menu on the student center. The student will then be prompted to accept an agreement to pay the remaining balance by a specified date. Accept the agreement to remove the hold and register like normal. For questions or assistance, contact the Billing Office at billingoffice@wjqklgz.com or 301.687.4321.
  • Brady Health Center – This hold prevents you from registering for the upcoming term or making changes to your course schedule because you have not submitted required health history forms. For questions or assistance, contact Brady Health at bradyhealth@wjqklgz.com or 301.687.4310.
  • JD Judicial Hold – This hold prevents you from registering for the upcoming term or making changes to your course schedule because you have pending judicial sanctions for a violation of the FSU Community Standards Policy. For questions or assistance, contact the Student Affairs Office at studentconduct@wjqklgz.com or 301.687.4312.

How do I register for fall/spring courses?
You can register for your fall/spring courses using the Scheduling Assistant in PAWS. To access the Scheduling Assistant, click the Scheduling Assistant link located above the Other Academic dropdown menu in your PAWS Student Center. You can download a step-by-step guide for navigating the scheduling assistant for more information (Note: you will need Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer to view the document).

How do I register for summer/winter session courses?
Registration for summer session courses begins on the same day as registration for the fall semester. Registration for winter session courses begins on the same day as registration for the spring semester. You may begin enrolling as soon as the registration window opens; however, your academic advisor must authorize your account for registration. For more information on summer/winter session, contact Special Academic Services at 301.687.4423.

How can I take more than 18 credit hours in a given semester?
To enroll for more than 18 credit hours, you must have earned an FSU cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or above, have completed at least one semester of course work at FSU, and have written permission of your advisor. To make this request, please complete the Course Overload Form and email it to your advisor, who will return it to the Registrar’s Office at reginfo@wjqklgz.com.

I am on academic probation/warning. Am I still able to register for courses next semester?
