Student Organizations
Frostburg State University's English Department is home to several active student organizations. If you're eligible for the national Honor Society, interested in creative writing, and/or preparing for a career in journalism, find some like-minded students in one or all of these groups. Each has regular meetings, organizes activities, and can provide you with opportunities to grow as a writer.
3 AM Society
Wake up! It's 3 AM! The 3 AM Society is for students interested in all forms of creative writing. The student-run organization sponsors outside-the-classroom workshops to critique each other's work, get-togethers at local poetry and fiction slams, and more. Sigma Tau Delta
Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. There are over 470 chapters, and some 225,000 members have been initiated over the years; among them have been such persons as Eudora Welty, James Dickey, Howard Nemerov, Robert Bly, and Nikki Giovanni. An international convention is held annually.
The Frostburg State University chapter of Sigma Tau Delta has celebrated its 40th anniversary. Our chapter members host events throughout the semester on campus and off campus. For example, in conjunction with the American Library Association’s Banned Books Week, Sigma Tau Delta hosts a reading from books that have been challenged or banned. In honor of Veterans Day, members host a reading of letters, diaries and published literature by and about veterans. All campus and community members are welcome to attend the events. Sigma Tau Delta members enjoy making friends, contributing to department activities, and having fun. Within the department, the society acts as a family, a group of people who love to discuss literature, professors, classes, and try to spread the joy of literature and writing to the community.
What are the requirements for Sigma Tau Delta membership at Frostburg State University?
Active Membership
- 3.0 GPA in the English major
- 3.0 overall GPA
- 3 semesters at FSU (one full semester if a transfer)
- 6 credits of English that count toward the major or minor beyond the general studies requirement
- one-time $45 membership fee
- Active members are required to participate in two events annually
What are the advantages of membership in Sigma Tau Delta?
Membership in Sigma Tau Delta is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment. It also serves as an incentive for continued high scholarship. It provides opportunities for those interested in English language and literature to join with like-minded persons on the local, regional, national, and international levels. Members receive the society's Newsletter while they remain active in their local chapters. They also receive and have the opportunity to contribute to the award-winning literary publication, The Rectangle, and are eligible to compete for a number of prizes for excellent writing. Student members are also eligible to compete for several $1,750-$2,000 scholarships and awards.
